How do I train for a TRIATHLON?

How do I train for a TRIATHLON?

Believe it or not, training for your first triathlon is easier than one might think. Yes, it takes dedication, perseverance and supportive people surrounding you, but it can actually be simpler than one would think.

SPLASH! Oxford put together a helpful list of items to get you started on your way to your first triathlon.

You do not have to break your bank account, but being sure you have proper equipment is important. You can borrow some equipment or even get from a sports second hand store to save some cash as well.

First, you definitely need a swim-suit and swim goggles. If you happen to have long hair, a swim cap is recommended as well.

Next, a bike that is in good working condition and fits you well. Remember, this is your first triathlon. You do not have to go out and purchase a triathlon or time trial bike. This is your first triathlon and you need to get through the first one to decide if this is something you are going to continue to do, or is just a one time thing.

We do recommend a decent pair of bike shorts and investing in the underwear to be worn under will help with any uncomfortable chaffing or saddle sores. This is not an area we recommend skimping on! Another essential piece of equipment would be a water bottle.

Lastly, a good pair of running shoes is a must. This is not an area we recommend you can pinch pennies on. Head to your local running store to get properly fitted for your shoes, as this will make a huge difference in your training progression and make your feet much happier.

There are local running and biking clubs you can join to help with your training. We recommend training with a group to keep you motivated and progressing through your training.

When it comes to your swim training, SPLASH! has you covered with our Triathlete Training Tuesdays (https://goo.gl/z466Wi).

Beginning Tuesday, May 29th and running through August 28th, we will be hosting a training group every week from 7:30-8:30pm. This program is led by a certified coach and will focus on stroke technique. This training is only $18 per week for drop-in. You can choose to come every week or drop-in when convenient (but we do think a weekly training session will be extremely beneficial for your training goals.)

Now, it is all up to you! Get moving and we will see you in the pool!
